One of the defining characteristics of premium spirits is aging in oak barrels. The wood imparts distinctive astringent notes so prized by connoisseurs, while also purifying the distillate of harmful compounds and lending it a smoother, rounder character. For those who don't want to spend large sums on purchasing, maintaining and replacing barrels, a practical alternative has been developed – oak chips. They give the drink a characteristic "smoky" aroma and enrich the flavor with notes of caramel and almonds. GUSTO oak chips for maceration come straight from Scotland and are made from the staves of whisky barrels in which, for 12 years, spirits from distilleries such as Kingsbarns, Annandale and Glenkinchie were matured. Recommendations: Oak absorbs part of the alcohol, so it is recommended to use a distillate of at least 50-55% ABV to ensure the final product does not fall below 40%.
